Do's and Don'ts when writing your resume

Note

If you're a applying for a software development role you can take inspiration from my resume here.

Mindsets to have when writing a resume

  • Keep everything concise, and easy to scan
  • Present your best foot forward
  • Signal how much value you can add to a company
  • Maintain an image of critical thinker. Think in terms of tradeoffs
  • Pride yourself by your ability to learn and adapt

Essentials

  • Contact Details

    Warning

If you don't have a solid profile. It will hurt your chances. Start building one now.

  • Role

Design & Readability

Avoid colors altogether. I'd even say only use black and white. Before adding any color I'd experiment first with font sizes, font weights, and opacity to emphasize and deemphasize elements.

I'd recommended choosing among Inter, Arial, and Open Sans.

Work experience

If you've pre-selected the work experiences you'll write in your resume. Be transparent about it. Employers generally don't mind and It will show you as a person of integrity.

Education

  • If you're a software developer. Employers generally value your experiences, and projects far more than a degree.
  • Don't add your GPA even If it's high. Many employers are wary of high GPA graduates feeling entitled for a high salary.

Skills

  • What do you want to do more of?

Other Sections

These could be just a conversation starter like the Interests. I'm hesitant to even put References here. If you had great colleagues, and you're certain that they could speak for you then put it. Otherwise It can backfire hard.

Don't go too crazy on the Awards section. It's just a way to signal that you're effective at what you do.

  • Interests

Should start a conversation so keep it short, and relatable
  • Awards

Be sure to not come off as braggy. This should only signal that you're renowned at what you do.
  • Reference

Some employes will ask 3 people they can call. So only list people that you know is certain to speak highly of you. I personally never add this. And If they ask for it I'd just find other roles instead.

Things to remove after writing the first draft

Go through this list after you've created a draft of your resume. These are meant to improve, and pluck out mistakes.

e.g very, passionate, friendly, polite, hard working -_-

e.g Dealt with problems other teams caused.
This can stir away the conversation off of technical groundings
